This beach house design is for a site on the corner of MacWood Road and First Ridge Road at Smith Lake near Forster NSW. The entire structure will be made from 5mm thick profiled metal plate which is economical and quick to build. This minimal structure gives the house a low embodied energy making it very envronmentally sustainable compared to conventional construction methods.
There is a 3 meter drop from the northern boundary (near the other house shown in the graphic) to the gutter on First Ridge road. It was a challenge to incorporate the building into the contours of the site but it represents a good example of how earth sheltered buildings can be integrated well into an urban block.
Almost all local coastal councils throughout Australia are requiring a more stringent ecological approach to beach house design. We believe that with the low cost technique we have developed, earth sheltered houses (underground houses) are now a more than viable sustainable, bushfire resistant and storm resistant house design.
